For this mini project, we have been asked to create three 8 bit images and “invade Kingston” photographing our works in public places.
As a starting point, I looked at Space Invaders. The game that started it all. The shooting space game first launched in 1979 and was made up of pixel like images. This was my starting point for ideas. After looking at the imagery and design of Space Invaders, I got a general concept of what my work had to look like and began with a mind map of ideas for location and design.
I thought about sizing first, to give be a better idea on locations and thought that small images would be quite nice to hide in areas. I thought about post boxes, signs and bus stops and felt that I would keep my options open until I had actually made the images and then would physically go out and see which locations worked best in person.
On my mind map, I thought about several ideas that would suit a small scale. I thought about tiny animal footprints, maybe stamped onto leaves, stones and other small things but felt that they would be too lost and go unnoticed. After much consideration, I decided to stick with the old fashioned method of pen to paper. I stuck with clean, bold shapes and used blue tack to stick them around Kingston.
